Check out Buzzword (www.buzzword.com)

If you'd like to see how robust Flex/Flash have become with Flash Player 9/ActionScript 3

And it's going/growing more and more powerful. Right now Adobe is on an excellent path....IMHO

[...] Wait, possibly in vain, for Apple to add Flash support. It is likely that Flash is not being included due to performance and battery life problems. [...]

[...] Risking iPhone coverage overexposure, today we ponder one of the most interesting questions about the future of Flash, iPhone and web standards. Despite assurances by Uncle Walt that Apple and Adobe are hard at work on a Flash Player for iPhone, plenty of naysayers, skeptics, and player-haters have voiced strong speculations that Flash will never appear on the iPhone for strategic, practical and technical reasons. A quick scan of comments on various iPhone related entries across the web reveals an almost universal plea amongst everyday users indicating that the only missing feature from Mobile Safari is the presence of a mainstream multimedia plugin. In fact, the world’s most popular piece of software, in history is well known to be absent from iPhone.1 [...]

Also from what I understand writing Flex apps about Flash 9 is the fact that a large portion of the player is written in assembly, so getting Flash to run on an ARM processor is going to take time and Apple had their schedule and Adobe had theirs. I doubt Apple was shipping them development models to begin porting the player to.

You are correct that Flash performance in OS X is abysmal. Watch a YouTube video? Full blown fan frenzy. Watch a simple flash ad at a newspaper web site? Wind tunnel.

Really, what on earth could it be doing?

There's no reason NewsFire couldn't be implemented in JavaScript with a server side component (which isn't a big deal since you need to be on the internet to get RSS feeds anyway)
