   The Slivia is the king of single boiler machines, but that’s not the be all and end all of home machines, do you drink mainly straight espresso, or milk based drinks? the larger boiler in the silvia means it takes a while to switch back and forth between pulling shots and steaming. If you mainly make milk drinks, then consider an entry level HX machine instead.

   Finally make sure you don’t skimp on a grinder, you’ll likely want something at least as a good as a Rocky, or even a Mazzer Mini.

   I’m a long time lover of Silvia; for years and years, she’s kept me going in the morning with a smile and nary a complaint.

   I do echo Simon’s note that the single boiler does take a few minutes to heat up; I tend to make waffles or toast while I’m waiting for the steamer to get to temperature to make a morning latté.

   The Rancilio Rocky is quite a good grinder, but make sure you remove the useless finger guard—beans get jammed under it easily, causing the morning grind to become more of a grind.

   I’d agree with what both Simon and Ben have said. Yes, Silvia takes a bit to heat up, but she makes a great cup of coffee and is a real best of breed in terms of home unit. I’ve just written a post on making good milk with a Silvia, which may help if you bite the bullet and get one.

   Awesome. In fact I did order one, and it’s supposed to arrive towards the end of this week. I am looking forward to a learning experience — and a great cup. Thanks for the tips, I’ll have to see how long it takes me to get proficient with the new machine.
