Not Dead, Just Busy

Since it’s been almost two months since my last post, I am delighted to report that I’m not actually dead.

I have been writing a sh*t-ton of Python lately and it’s literally changed my life. For the better. I could be such a prig about Objective-C sometimes.

I am also delighted to hear that MarsEdit has been picked up by Daniel Jalkut and is under development again. Even with the seemingly interminable dormant period during MarsEdit’s development, I still think it’s the best blog software on Mac OS X today.

I’ll take this time to also repeat my open plea for software engineers, QA people, and generally good folk to come work with me at Slide. Did you know that we’re #2 on Fortune’s Next Net 25 this year? I bet you didn’t. Other people elsewhere are writing equally implausible platitudes about us, believe you me, someone has a scrapbook of it all. E-mail us and tell ‘em that Dave sent you.

so u like python or not? after starting out in python and moving to c++ in class objective c feels like a big improvement because of the readability of the bracket notation instead of the dot notation. brackets for functions, dots for acessors, it’s the difference that makes it easier to read for me, that and the named parameters. thats what makes c++ such an enigma to read sometimes.

dots for instance variables, sorry. A dot for an accessor will get you slapped by your professor.

Python is pretty nifty. I think that Python is a great language with a fairly mediocre set of frameworks, wheras Objective-C is a good language with an utterly amazing set of frameworks. I definitely like the GC and the dynamic runtime, and Python’s keyword arguments are almost as good for readability as Objective-C’s named parameters.

I think that it would be entirely possible to write a framework that’s as rich as Cocoa in Python — I’m sure that some of the web frameworks out there are as good at what they do as Cocoa is for the desktop. The fact that no one seems to have done Python on the desktop in any significant way (ie: wxPython doesn’t count, it’s just a C++ framework with Python glue bolted on) just points to the focus of software engineering in the last 10 years.

Not to say that it shouldn’t be done, though.
