G5 Media Center Reloaded
So, now the G5 media center is hooked up to a Sony KDS-60A2000. Talk about screen real estate! That’s a 720p movie playing over there in the corner.
The KDS-60A2000 is difficult to photograph because it just puts out so damn much light. The above is the best I could do without the rest of the picture going completely black.
More to come as I explore this magnificent HDTV thing. Some stuff I’ve already learned:
- Comcast’s HD-DVR sucks rocks
- VLC has a “use S/PDIF when available” setting which means that when playing back content with 5.1 audio, that’s what you’ll hear — assuming you’re using the G5’s S/PDIF out to your receiver
- Similarly, you want to tell DVD Player.app to use the digital output at all times, and not use the system sound output (which is the mind-boggling default)
- DVD Player is a pretty good upscaling DVD player, but nothing can really make up for the fact that standard def content just looks like crap once you’ve become accustomed to HD
That’s all for now. Yay digital content!
