re:search 1.0
re:search is a little application that’ll hopefully make your Internet search life a little faster.

Modeled after Apple’s Spotlight and snap.com, re:search breaks Internet search down into three steps:
- Press Command-Shift-Space from any application.
- Type something in the search box and hit Return.
- Results ahoy!
Beyond the basics, you can narrow down your search to a specific site (for example, imdb.com). As you might expect, re:search remembers your recent searches and the specific sites you’ve searched for quick access later. (The “site” field autocompletes, so you can just type “im” for imdb.com, and such.) The results of your searches are cached for about a day to further improve performance.
re:search is a “UI element” application, which means it has no icon in the Dock. While I’m sure some people will hate this, I can’t stand having more than 10 or 12 Dock tiles—and besides, the global hotkey is there for instant Internet search access. Instead, re:search provides an icon in the menu bar next to Sync Services, the battery meter, Spotlight, and whatever other doohickeys you might have up there. I’m really not sure what most people think, and for some reason Apple has made it very difficult for this to be user-configurable, so I’ll have to listen to what people want for the next version on this.
You can do some additional things, like drag and drop individual results out of the result list into your favorite Internetmobile (if you need to), or hit the Open button, or double-click the result. Because re:search is not meant to be a full-featured browser, when you hit a download link, this too will open in your default browser.
There may be some other features. You’re advised to read the Help page, which will pop up the first time you launch the application, or at any time from the menu.
Have fun, and be sure to let me know what you think.
Download re:search (Apple disk image, about 180kb, Universal, requires Tiger, etc.)
